Scuppers Spring Crew and Apprentice Positions on the Sloop

Clearwater Crew: The crew includes first and second mates, a deckhand, bosun, engineer, and cook. Two complete crews are hired to split up the April through October sailing season. Interest in the organization’s environmental mission and participation in the on-board education program are required. Per USCG regulations, all sailing crew are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Sloop’s Apprentice: Two apprentice positions are available per month from April until October. Previous sailing experience is not required. Apprentices receive room and board on the sloop and a stipend every week. Apprenticeships are also available in the Winter Maintenance Season. Click here for more information.

  Apprentices Positions Available (two month positions, one month positions possible)

Clearwater is a 107' gaff topsail sloop which conducts environmentally focused, experiential education programs for school groups grades 4 to 12+ on the beautiful Hudson River.

 
1st Mate (Relief Captain)
Responsible for supervision, seamanship & safety, and training of professional crew, apprentices, and volunteers. Directs ongoing maintenance and repairs. License (min.100t inland) preferred, but not required.
 
2nd Mate
Relief first mate (two days/wk). Full participant in on-board environmental education program.
 
Cook
Provide care and sustenance for an adoring population of 10-18 professional and volunteer crew. Must be proficient in all styles (i.e. vegan, vegetarian, omnivore). Responsible for all galley management and provisioning, with an emphasis on buying local whenever possible.
 
Engineer
Responsible for maintenance and repair of Clearwater’s modest mechanical and electrical systems. Full deck and education program participant. Responsible for training professional crew as relief engineers. Sailing and maintenance experience preferred.
 
Bosun
Responsible for maintenance of hull, spars, rig, and sails. Full education program participant. Manages bosun’s and paint lockers, and maintenance days. Sailing and maintenance experience preferred.
 
Deck Hand
Responsible for close supervision of apprentices and volunteers on deck. Full education program participant. Some sailing experience preferred.
